Breathing: a gesture so natural that we often forget to ask ourselves what is really in the air around us. However, behind this essential action lies a worrying reality: Air pollution, an invisible enemy that impacts our health, our environment and our future.

What is air pollution?

Air pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances in the atmosphere. These pollutants, of natural or human origin, can be:

  • Fine particles (PM10, PM2.5) : invisible to the naked eye, they penetrate deep into our lungs.
  • Polluting gases such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), or ozone (O3).
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds) : emitted by solvents, paints, or even certain household products.
  • Biological pollutants : pollens, molds, bacteria.

Every day, these substances impact our health and our environment.

Where does it come from?

The sources of air pollution are multiple:

  • Industrial : factories, refineries, and thermal power plants.
  • Transports : internal combustion engine vehicles, airplanes, and boats.
  • Domestique : wood heating, chemical products used in the home.
  • Naturelle : volcanic eruptions, sandstorms, forest fires.

While some sources are beyond our control, others depend directly on our lifestyle.

What are the impacts of air pollution?

On Human Health

Air pollution is responsible for respiratory diseases (asthma, chronic bronchitis) and cardiovascular diseases. According to the WHO, it causes 7 million premature deaths per year in the world.

On the environment

Pollutants weaken ecosystems, acidify soils and waters, and reduce biodiversity. Climate change is also exacerbating pollution phenomena, creating a vicious circle.

On the economy

The costs associated with health, agricultural losses, and infrastructure damage are considerable.

What can we do to reduce air pollution?

At the Individual Level

  • Favour soft modes of transport: walking, cycling, or carpooling.
  • Reduce the use of chemicals in the home.
  • Investing in indoor air purification systems, such as those offered by Bioteos, to protect your living space.

At the collective level

  • Support public policies that promote renewable energies and sustainable transport.
  • Encourage businesses to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.
  • Participate in local initiatives to improve air quality.
